With so many CMS options out there, where does elKontent fit in the content management world?
There are many approaches to selecting a content management system, and the most popular ones can be grouped as follows:
- Purchase a commercial CMS
- Customize an open-source CMS
- Build a CMS from scratch
The pluses and minuses of each approach are relevant mainly in the context of a given organization. For instance, the main benefits of a commercial CMS (complexity of features, multiple approval hierarchy, sophisticated work flows, document storage and version control) can be drawbacks for a smaller organization as these features are simply not needed and won't be used, yet the content managers still need to learn how to use (or ignore) these features.
The effort required to customize and maintain an open source CMS, and the well-known lack of support from an open source CMS vendor may be a substantial minus for an organization with limited IT resources, but won't be a big deal for a company that has such resources available on staff.
Here is a diagram that illustrates the relationship between the number of content contributors versus the number of internal IT resources available, and where elKontent fits in the picture:

The fewer content management stakeholders an organization has, the simpler its needs are and the less benefit it would derive from an enterprise CMS, considering the cost and complexity.
A traditional approach for such an organization would be to look for an open-source CMS solution. What many CMBs don't realize is that the real efforts and costs of customizing and maintaining an open-source content management solution end up being a lot higher than first anticipated.
